Entering The CA Profession

University Degree Requirement
Any student is eligible to enter the CA profession, provided he/she has a degree from a recognized Canadian university. Most students have a BBA or BComm degree. However, students with other degrees are also attractive candidates to public accounting firms.

Mature Students
Prospective students who do not have a university degree may possess the required skills and business experience to become CAs. These candidates can be admitted as a CA student provided they:

  1. have a Canadian High School Diploma (any program) or equivalent;

  2. possess at least five years relevant work experience; applicants may receive credit for up to two years experience on the basis of attendance at a recognized post-secondary institution;

  3. are employed with an approved office;

  4. receive Council approval for admission;

  5. must normally have completed all of the ASCA Group I courses.

Francophone Students
Francophone graduates from Université de Moncton who have completed their licentiate from a Quebec university are eligible to complete their 30 month practical experience requirements in an approved office in New Brunswick. Upon completion and having passed the UFE, the student will be admitted as a member of the NBICA.

Practical Experience
30 month practical experience is a requisite to the exercise of sound professional judgment in the areas of GAAP and auditing standards, ethics, information technology, taxation and law.

The Atlantic School of Chartered Accountancy
ASCA is an integral component of the education of CA students throughout Atlantic Canada. ASCA's mandate is the development, delivery and administration of the educational program for CA students registered with the Atlantic CA Institutes and Bermuda. The Uniform Evaluation (UFE)
The UFE is internationally recognized as a pre-eminent professional examination written upon completion of the required ASCA courses. It is a truly national exam, in that it is the common qualifying exam for all prospective Canadian CAs. The UFE is actually a comprehensive three day examination, designed to test the core knowledge, analytical skills and professional judgment of entry level CAs in the areas of professional practice, information systems, audit services, personal and corporate taxation, financial accounting and reporting, managerial accounting and financial management.
