What do CAs do?
Tradition
Since all CAs begin their careers with a public practice firm,
it is to be expected that most people have traditionally perceived
CAs as professional accountants who provide auditing, accounting
and tax services to the public. However, the reality has been
that CAs are employed in a wide variety of sectors beyond public
practice. Indeed, on a national basis, about 50% of Canada's CAs
no longer practice public accounting. By the year 2015, it is
estimated that only 30% of CAs will practice public accounting.
The remaining 70% will be employed in industry, education or government.

The foundation of the CA designation
are the principles of integrity and objectivity. It is not surprising,
therefore, that CAs have used this foundation to succeed in financial
management, management consulting, information technology, forensic
accounting, educators in universities, colleges, and public schools,
public service and as entrepreneurs in their own right. The CA
designation is respected throughout the world. Hence, the designation
brings with it virtually limitless career opportunities.

Forces of Change
The strength and heritage of the CA profession is its unparalleled
history and its rich tradition, and its many thousand of diverse
and talented members. Despite its prominence, the CA profession
must address certain forces:
-
the nature and speed
of technological change
-
globalization
-
diversity
-
complexity of information
distribution systems
-
changing market expectations

that will have a significant impact
on what CAs do and how they do it. The Inter-Institute Vision
Task Force was created by the CA profession to address these forces
of change.
